Class 2

Class 2- Year 1 & 2- Miss Machin

Welcome to Class 2 – Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)

Hello and welcome to class 2!

In class 2 the children move from free choice activities and a play-based curriculum to more formal and structured learning. We aim to make this transition as smooth as possible ensuring the children are given time to adapt to their new routines and curriculum. During the morning we focus on Maths, English and Phonics, the afternoons cover subjects in the wider curriculum including Science, History, Geography, Art, DT and ICT.

General Information

Reading - We expect children to be reading most days and for parents/carers to sign their child's reading record to acknowledge this. We ask very kindly that you make note of the number of reads your child has so we can award them their rainbow readers badge. Please ensure that your child has their reading book and reading record in school every day.

All homework will be available via Google Classroom. Maths homework will be on maths.co.uk and it will be related to what the children are learning at school. English homework will be spelling, punctuation or grammar based and this can be handed in on Google classroom

In the summer term of Year 1, children will be tested on their phonics by being asked to read 40 words. These will all be phonetically decodable, 20 will be real words and 20 will be fake words. We ask that you practise our Phonics sounds as much as possible. If your child does not pass in year 1, they will retake the Phonics screening again in Year 2. Your support at home is greatly appreciated.

PE- is on a Tuesday afternoon, children should come to school in their PE kit.

Maths

We have been using our concrete resources to help us create as many different number sentences as possible!

English

In English we have been learning to recite a poem from heart and of course we had to include some actions to go along with it.

Geography

To start our topic of our local area, we explored our wonderful village and looked at the important landmarks of our village. We have been practising finding the UK on different types of maps and even had a go at creating our own map of the classroom! We then had to give our partners instructions using the points of a compass to tell them the direction they should be walking in.

RE

In RE we have been learning about Diwali. We started by acting out the story of Rama and Sita and to understand where the celebration of Diwali comes from. We then made Rangoli patterns and Diva lamps to experience what it is like to prepare for Diwali.
