Curriculum

Together through faith we will aspire to grow in our understanding of ourselves, in our abilities and in our knowledge of God’s wonderful diverse world.

At St James CE Primary Academy, we are committed to providing high standards of teaching and learning. We expect pupils to work hard to achieve their best. We use a variety of teaching styles and groupings to help them to learn.

At St James we educate our children for the future, enabling them to develop as confident, independent, well-balanced individuals who care about their community and the wider world, and want to look after it. The children leave St James with a life-long love of learning.

We are committed to providing a wide range of opportunities to inspire children, whatever their interests or talents. Children, teachers, and parents are enthused by our curriculum which aims to be challenging, diverse, broad and exciting. We make learning fun and relevant.

Phonics is taught throughout EYFS and Key Stage 1 using the Essential Letters and Sounds scheme. When children are ready to move beyond phonically decodable books, we use Accelerated Reader: children read from a range of scheme and 'real' books.

English is taught every day and reading is key to everything we do at St James.  Children are taught the skills necessary to read and write at appropriate levels with high expectations for writing across all areas of the curriculum. English lessons are based around a Quality Text for each year group.

In Maths we follow the White Rose scheme of work as our starting point, though other resources are used to supplement this in response to the needs of the children.

Other areas of the curriculum are taught as discrete units, though where making connections helps learning, this is done. We use a mixture of commercially available plans alongside units developed ‘in-house’.
