Maths

At St James CE Primary Academy, we teach our children how to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. We want our children to recognise and understand relationships and patterns in numbers in the world around them. We expect Mathematics to be utilised as a tool beyond the daily Mathematics lessons and beyond the classroom.

We use the White Rose scheme of work across the Academy, supplemented by other resources in order to meet best the needs of the children.

At St James we aim to instill a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Put numbers first: numbers are at their heart of everything we do, we believe confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
  • Put depth before breadth: we reinforce knowledge again and again.
  • Encourage collaboration: children can progress through the schemes as a group, supporting each other as they learn.
  • Focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.
